If you just got a new puppy crate training may be a good idea to get him potty trained. The basics behind this are to confine and observe. Every dog may differ from each other with respect to their timings. The timing osf a dog depends on the feeding and exercise schedules. A puppy can be kept in crate which is large enough for the movement but not too large so that he sits in a corner and pee on the other. If you have got a crate that is too large for him you can put a divider in it so that it reduces the space. The whole idea is to confine and observe.
The puppy should be in the crate unless you can be attentive to him and observe him. When he shows the signs of letting go, take him out side. Those signs could include sniffing, circling, whining. You should be observant when he is out of crate. This may look like confinement but this will pay off in the years to come when you wont be bothered by his litter. So its better to teach him early that he is supposed to go out for his potty.
